Several Twitter users in India cried foul as they found their accounts to be suspended for no clear reason. Some of the users who reported the snag include prominent news personalities such as Faking News editor Rahul Roushan and Rupa Subramanya.
The glitch was first reported by Rupa Subramanya who tweeted out saying that her Twitter account was suspended. She received a message saying it may have been something that was retweeted that made her account look like spam.
Soon enough, it was found that hers was not the only account that faced Twitter’s brunt and, in fact, several others including some right-wing accounts faced a similar situation. Some average users, too, reportedly faced a similar problem.
Twitter later responded in a tweet saying that the issue was caused due to a technical glitch, which has been resolved. But considering the pattern of suspensions, Twitter’s explanation (or the lack of it) could seem inadequate.
According to the Twitter Help page, it suspends accounts when it recognises any suspicious activity including user abuse and spam. It can also suspend accounts if it suspects an account has been hacked or compromised.
Despite the Twitter’s clarification, it looks like users who repeatedly retweet or add a large number of unrelated users to lists, are the ones who came under Twitter’s scanner.
