Netizens globally
will now have an alternate to widely used '.com' in form of '.ooo'
which has been launched by e-commerce company Infibeam.
Soon people across the world will be able to access their favorite
websites ending with '.ooo'. Netizens globally will now have an
alternate to widely used '.com' in form of '.ooo' which has been
launched by Ahmedabad-based e-commerce company Infibeam. Infibeam
announced the launch of the new domain after it was granted license by
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) last month.
The new generic top level domain (TLD) '.ooo' aims to provide alternate domain registration solutions to those who have failed to register their brand name or business names on '.com' domain. Also, '.ooo' is seen as a mobile-friendly domain as it reduces usage of multiple keys on phones.
"With over 100,000 websites hosted every day, to get name of choice for internet address has become chronic challenge over current domain extensions. '.ooo' has offered a fresh opportunity to individuals, business owner and entrepreneurs to register their identity as per their choice," said Vishal Mehta, founder and CEO, Infibeam.
The e-commerce player has already entered into registry registrar agreement (RRA) with around 200 leading global domain registrars for making available '.ooo' to the customers worldwide. The '.ooo' will be wholesaled to the registrars and they will further retail to the end user.
"We are targeting 1 million to 2 million domain names in next 12-18 months. Of these, around 5-10% domains are expected to be registered in India," added Mehta. During the brief sunrise period from September 22 to October 23 before the global launch, out of 34,000 trademark holders across the world, most of them applied for website names on '.ooo' domain.
The revenue from the '.ooo' domain will be subscription based. Depending on the registrar, the website name registration can range from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000 per year and in some cases it may also be on monthly basis, Mehta said.
